Tips For Remedying An Ingrown Toenail

Most of us have experienced an ingrown toenail and know the discomfort it can bring. In some cases, ingrown toenails can even need medical attention to be treated, but most can be fixed with at-home remedies. If you notice that the pain of the ingrown toenail in Joliet is not subsiding, or infection begins, contact Suburban Foot and Ankle at (630) 226-9860.

Soak Your Feet

Soaking the affected foot for 15 to 20 minutes three to four times a day in warm water can help to alleviate the pain associated with ingrown toenails. Soaking your feet can reduce tenderness and swelling, making the ingrown less uncomfortable.

Place a Wedge

After soaking is the best time to place a wedge beneath the nail. A wedge should be placed beneath the ingrown toenail to lift the nail and allow for it to grow above the skin’s edge. It is recommended to use a small piece of cotton or waxed dental floss to slightly lift the nail to help provide relief.

Use Antibacterial Cream

Antibacterial cream can help you avoid infection. Apply the cream to the tender area and place a bandage over it once or twice daily. If you suspect that an ingrown toenail has become infected it is best to contact Suburban Foot and Ankle for professional advice.

Take Anti-Inflammatory Medication

Anti-inflammatory medications can be purchased over-the-counter at your local drug store. Some examples of these medications include Advil, ibuprofen, and Aleve. Taking an anti-inflammatory can reduce swelling and help alleviate discomfort.
