How Pregnancy Changes Your Feet

For many, being pregnant is one of the most magical times of life. During this time, your entire body changes, including your feet and ankles. Our podiatrist in Joliet wants to help make pregnancy as enjoyable as possible by addressing potential problems and how you can prevent or treat them.

Hormonal Changes

It’s no secret that hormones change during pregnancy. However, some of these hormones relax the ligaments in your feet, leading to fallen arches (over-pronation). Because of this, you may notice that your feet are larger than they were before, resulting in a need for larger shoes.

Excess weight can also put more stress on your compromised feet, especially your arches. Pregnant women sometimes develop heel pain, also called plantar fasciitis, because of carrying the extra weight on the arches.

To prevent these problems from progressing, make sure to take plenty of rest periods throughout the day so you are not standing for long periods of time. Our podiatrist in Joliet can also discuss the benefits of custom orthotics with you to help your fallen arches.

Excess Swelling

During pregnancy, there is an increase in fluid in your body’s tissues. It is normal to carry extra fluids in your feet and ankles during pregnancy because gravity pulls down the fluid. Wearing compression stockings can help minimize swelling. You should also drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid foods with a lot of salt.

If you are having problems with foot or ankle pain during pregnancy, schedule an appointment with our podiatrist in Joliet.
