Hammertoe: What is It?

You’ve likely heard the term “hammertoe” before, but do you know what it means? Hammertoe in Joliet occurs when one or both joints of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes abnormally bends. While the condition may start off mildly, it can get worse over time. This means that it is crucial to catch the development as early as possible in order to avoid further complications down the road.

In order to avoid the development of a hammertoe in Joliet, it is important to understand why they form in the first place. They develop due to a muscle and tendon imbalance that leads to the bending of the toe. Some people may also develop hammertoe because of neurological changes that occur in the feet over time.

Signs Hammertoe is Developing

If you notice any of the following signs, it is a good idea to make an appointment with our team:

  • Pain and/or irritation to a particular toe when you are wearing shoes
  • A buildup of skin on or between the toes
  • Redness, swelling or a burning sensation
  • Open sores

Hammertoes may get worse over time, and some of them get worse faster than others. Nonsurgical treatment options include switching your shoes, wearing orthotic devices, taking certain medications, or obtaining padding for corns or calluses. In extreme cases, surgery might be needed.

Make sure that you are wearing comfortable footwear that doesn’t impact your toes! If you notice that symptoms of hammertoe in Joliet are starting to develop, contact our team at Suburban Foot & Ankle to schedule an appointment.
